The term "Copyright free" is misleading
Let me first point out that the term "Copyright free" music is very misleading. Almost all music is always Copyrighted - unless they are in the "Public domain", which is incredibly rare, or century old music, such as Beethoven or Mozart.
So the term "Copyright free" here simply refers to that the Copyright holder has issued a license that allows the use of their music while live streaming on Twitch or Mixer and/or be part of YouTube videos, without the fear of receiving a "Copyright claim", which may lead to "strikes" on your Twitch or YouTube channel. With other words, they are giving us permission to use their Copyrighted music in these specific situations.
However, most Copyright holders usually have certain conditions to allow others to use their music. For example, you might need to give "attribution" (as in to give appropriate credit) back to holder in form of a text or mentions, or you might need to purchase the music so it becomes "Royalty-free", meaning you may use it in your own content, as many times as you, want without giving attribution.
So the discussion is not really about whether you are allowed to play or use "Copyrighted music" or not in your stream or in your YouTube video, but whether you have permission from the Copyright holder to do it, and under what conditions. It's really that simple.
I have deliberately excluded individual artists
I know there is a massive amount of artists that have spoken out and said that their music can be used freely while live streaming and in YouTube videos - which is truly awesome! However, I have deliberately excluded them from my research due to 3 reasons;
- Just as I just pointed out, there is literally a massive amount of artists out there and it is simply not possible, time-wise, to research each artist, what music they have, take screenshots of their license (and a Tweet is not really a solid legal case), etc
- Artists may not actually be the actual Copyright holder of their music, or have the permission to license out their music, but the actual record label they are signed to, so even though an artist has spoken out that their music can be used freely, it might not be a legally true, which would require additional research to double check
- If an artist signs up to a record label, most likely the record label will not easily acknowledge previous loose statements and simply just Copyright claim all old VODs, and finding old proof and disputing that legally will probably be really cumbersome for most content creators
So based on these 3 reasons, I found it more useful to research larger organizations such as music services, record labels or any other large databases of music.
Please always double check the current license before using the music
Lastly, I also want to clarify that I am (obviously) not a lawyer. The list below is simply my best attempt to compile a list of music sources and their license information, by reading, understanding and taking screenshots of each service's license information.
I am not liable if any information below is interpreted wrongly, or has been updated since I did this list, or any other situation, that could cause any harm of damage to your own Copyright status. So please double check and do your own research before using any Copyrighted music!
However, if you do find anything wrong or know of a large source of music that could be added to this list, simply just contact me and I'll add! :)
